A new kind of magnetism

ETH Zurich researchers have detected a new type of magnetism in an artificially produced material. The material becomes ferromagnetic through minimization of the kinetic energy of its electrons.

Researchers at ETH have detected a new kind of ferromagnetism that is different from the common fridge magnet.
In this “kinetic magnetism” the material becomes magnetic because the energy of motion of the electrons is minimized when their magnetic moments align.  ->
